Troops on alert on eve of Philippine Muslim vote

ZAMBOANGA, Philippines (Reuters) - Philippine troops went on full alert on Sunday to repel any violence by followers of a rebellious Filipino Muslim chief detained in Malaysia ahead of Monday's elections to pick a new Muslim regional governor.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo thanked Malaysia for capturing Muslim governor Nur Misuari and said she would prefer he remained in a Malaysian jail to face local laws before deportation to the Philippines, where he faces rebellion charges.

Misuari was captured by police in the Malaysian state of Sabah on Saturday after hundreds of guerrillas loyal to him launched an uprising on the southern Philippine island of Jolo.
