Hi, ratan -

"Osama has already done what no other man has ever done. Destroyed life and property ot the tune of Billions of dollars. Probably made money for his friends and relatives (shorting airlines stocks day before WTC), brought down the international economies, brought the muslim religion to the forefront (and most people including Bush are praising the religion), became an immortal name in history. He may also be the cause of peace between Israel and Palestine (we shall see), and of course put Afghanistan on the world map."

What you say is largely true: but these results come not from Osama's success, but from his failure to achieve his aims. What you omit is that Osama has failed to plunge the world into war, he has failed to pit Muslim against Christian on a global scale, and he has failed (so far) in his hatred-filled vision of a theistic apocalypse.

Osama's wish was never for beneficial ends. His wish was for personal power; he and his followers co-opted Islamic Fundamentalism to advance the aims of his terrorist clique. He pretends to speak for Islam, but those who hope to see a better day for Islamic peoples will not find the way in his direction.

The mechanisms of international trade and geopolitical transactions are delicate, and easily interrupted. Those who would destroy them will never share in their benefits.

It remains for Islamic people to decide what they want, and how they will express that desire. It remains for them to decide whether the Osamas of this world can take them where they want to go.

War is easy, destruction is simple. The genius of humanity is in building, in the time and effort given to creation, and perpetuation of what is good.

Western industrialized countries have, by their egalitarian nature, allowed Islamic and Christian peoples of all types to live, to flourish, and to enjoy the benefits of existence within their borders, without distinction. They have allowed the systemic persecution of no religion.

If that is the case, then what injury has been offered to Islam?

How much of the responsibility for the plight of Islamic peoples lies on their own shoulders? Who is responsible for their hatred of Jews, when centuries ago, Islam sheltered Jew and Christian alike as "People of the Book"?

What future will the Osamas give Islamic and Christian peoples? War, deprivation, ignorance and strife will blacken our existence.

You may choose to celebrate Osama's "accomplishments" as a success. The only hope for the world lies in his continued failure.

Regards,

Jim
