CSFB raises Taiwan PC sector ratings

sg.news.yahoo.com

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Credit Suisse First Boston on Monday upgraded its rating on Taiwan's personal computer sector to "overweight" from "neutral", saying the worst of the global personal computer demand slump has passed.

CSFB analyst Kirk Yang also raised his ratings on motherboard maker Asustek <2357> and notebook PC makers Quanta Computer <2382> and Compal Electronics <2324> to "buy" from "hold".

"Although we continue to believe a true PC demand recovery will not occur until 3Q '02, the worst of the global PC demand should be behind us," Yang wrote in a research note.

The note not specifically name Taiwan's major desktop PC makers Acer Inc <2306> and Mitac International Corp <2315>.

The upgrade, the first among foreign investment banks, came just days after Taiwan's economics ministry proposed last week allowing local companies to produce 122 electronic products in China, including notebook computers.
