It's funny you should mention this. I was considering the same thing. On Black Friday, all of the mediots were cheerfully telling us how sales were going so much better than last year, while they minimized discussing how retailers had been forced to slash prices significantly to spur sales. Like always, the truth will slowly leak out over time, but don't be surprised if we see a little more exaggeration of the sales data before the truth eventually becomes common knowledge.

In fact, I wanted to start a comparison log (of links to news articles) to illustrate the same mediots going from initially reporting great holiday sales data to eventually changing the story to the truth. I haven't had time to do so so far.

The market is going much higher, good numbers or bad. Back to irrational exuberance for the foreseeable future.

retail sales from Shopping Center Assn.

washingtonpost.com

Sales were weakest in 5 years, and specialty stores were down. I've noticed since Sep 11 that Tysons and other malls had store closings, probably about 10 stores in Tysons Corner alone. Usually, the failing stores will close immediately after Xmas. The Telecheck survey is somewhat misleading as it focuses only on same store sales. I would also gather that people who shop by check predominantly shop at the discount stores, such as WalMarts, Costco, and other stores that they frequent regularly.
