NATO AND RUSSIA MOVE CLOSER BUT REMAIN WARY November 26, 2001

The EU Observer reports: “Lord Robertson, the Secretary-General of NATO paid his long-awaited visit to Russia on Thursday, 22 November 2001. In the wake of friendly negotiations between Presidents Bush and Putin as well as clear indications from Prime Minister Blair that NATO must change its attitude towards Russia; this visit is seen as possibly crucial in the relationship between the former enemies.
In Russia there has been more talk by high-ranking politicians, and even occasional military officers, about the need to be more open towards the West, to abandon old enmities, possibly to think of joining NATO at some future date. In turn, the West has bent over backwards to be friendly towards Russia, especially in the wake of 11 September.

Russia is perceived as a vital ally in the fight against terrorism and Western leaders have shown themselves to be prepared to overlook many problems, not least that of Chechnya, in order to retain President Putin's friendship…”
