The defence secretary paid tribute to the "professionalism and gallantry" of UK soldiers working inside the war-torn country.

Giving news of the injuries, he said: "British forces have been active on the ground inside Afghanistan for some time.

"Working closely with US forces they have been engaged in a range of operation tasks in different parts of Afghanistan."

Hospital treatment
The casualties, whom the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said had been injured in the same place and during the past few days, have now returned to the UK for hospital treatment.

An MoD spokesman said the casualty count is "in single figures" and none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

The relatives of those affected had been informed, he added.

The number of troops at Bagram airport has been increased

Mr Hoon said the "bulk" of the high alert troops will have their 'notice to move' level reduced to one week.

The changing situation in Afghanistan made the decision possible but the UK would still have "maximum flexibility" to react to new developments, he continued.

Soldiers from 2 Battalion Parachute Regiment and 16 Air Assault Brigade would remain on the two-day standby, added Mr Hoon.
