M,
You are right that biotech is a risk and not all stocks will perform, that's the same in any sector but there are winners in the making. Some of the tier four (idea only based companies) present the biggest opportunities but also the largest risk. I trade one tier four company every week and I have managed a profit on every trade. This board isn't about trading so I haven't mentioned it but it pays the bills. (paid for my new Grady White boat that I can see from my window tied up at the dock) But I won't mention that either because the mention of profit here seems to draw negative notes. Tier three is beyond the idea stage and has started some investigation, I wouldn't buy a tier three company, too many drop out. Tier two is where the action is - a patent portfolio, one or two drugs in human testing, big pharma partners, maybe one drug on the market, possibly some profits. Tier one is where the Gorilla's are with drugs on the market and profits but the opportunity is lost on mature companies. True, a new drug can bring billions in revenue but they need them to replace expiring patents. Notice that with these stocks profits don't enter into analysis until tier four.
Tier four is QCOM, making money but the future doesn't look all that great. I held 12,500 shares at the top of the market and zero now. I'm not against silicon but it's time to move on.
Just like any field of stocks, their are a few winners but in your lifetime you only need one great stock.
