Well, I was actually using it as a rather specific and I think quite justified criticism...

Is there some idea that someone cloned would be lacking a soul? Seems rather medieval.
I do indeed think that most pre-renaissance West Europeans would conclude that a 'baby' produced artificially, in a glass vessel, by people he might dimly comprehend as alchemists or sorcerers, outside the body of any mother, would lack a soul and therefore not be human. I'd be impressed and astonished if they thought otherwise.

I was aiming it at people today who might reproduce this attitude.
