I have no desire to return to the Middle Ages, but we are in the debt of those who held Europe together after the ravages of barbaric tribes and the depradations of the Vikings; who fought back the Saracens and Turks, and labored in their scriptoria to keep alive what learning survived; who built not only great cathedrals to uplift the soul of man, but great universities to extend learning to the middle classes. Before the major Renaissance, thinkers like Aquinas profited from rediscovered manuscripts and Arabic commentaries, and treated with respect Persians such as Avicenna, Jews such as Maimonides, and Arabs such as Al- Farabi. We are foolish to act as if it were merely a morass, although it was, indeed, something to be outgrown.......
