Currently, the majority of people who connect to the Internet from laptops and PDAs using wireless LAN networks reside in the United States, according to the report, titled Public Wireless LAN Access: Market Forecasts. 'The emergence of 802.11b as the dominant technology for public wireless LANs means that other wireless standards, such as Bluetooth, will be sidelined to some extent in this market,' predicts Ross Pow, author of the report. In an August report, Analysys said it expected use of public wireless LANs to cut into about 10 percent of mobile operators next-generation data revenue. Networks using the 802.11b standard can deliver data about 10 times faster than Bluetooth, which transmits at about 1 megabit per second. However, the new 802.11a technology can transmit wireless data at speeds up to 54 Mbps. In the United States, companies delivering services using 802.11b wireless technology have struggled. Metricom's Ricochet went bankrupt and sold its billion-dollar network to Aerie Networks of Denver for a fraction of the cost. Richardson, Texas-based MobileStar began shutting down its network earlier this month, but was rescued by VoiceStream Wireless. At press time, OmniSky Corp.'s future is uncertain.
