What a reactionary argument: We've got to do it this way, because this is the way we do it.

Most other airport workers are federal:

Airports are generally municipal. The planes, pilots, and crews are employees of the airlines. Only air traffic controllers are federal employees, in the list you give. The FAA regulates things, but security could be better regulated, too.........

"Most other airport workers are federal: "The Federal Aviation Administration controls the airports, the planes and the crews. Air traffic controllers, all federal employees, control the movement of aircraft on the ground and in the air."

I don't think this is accurate. As far as I am aware only the air traffic controllers are federal employees. All others are privately employed or State employees.

"Only getting passengers on planes is left in the hands of private companies -- and that's where all the problems are."

Actually, if you think about it the culprit was the government. After all the terrorists did not sneak any guns onto the planes. The only items taken on (box cutters) were permitted under federal rules. The real problem was that our government let these guys in the country without adequate checks.

In my view, the federalization of the employees is just a silly feel good idea. The fact is the folks who do this work are minimum wage workers and federalizing them and paying them more will not make them any better. Now, if we required that all employees complete a rigorous training program similar to police training and hired a higher caliber of employee and demanded excellence, we would be accomplishing something. Unfortunately, the government seldom demands excellence.
