The idea isn't that Intel is copying AMD's process, but that they are (one to two years later) abandoning their previous production strategy and starting to develop production capabilities using SOI.

Yes, yes, I know that, like everyone else, Intel has experimented with SOI materials for years. But they've made it very clear that they didn't think SOI was going to be necessary, or even helpful, and haven't been developing the technologies necessary for mass production of SOI devices. That's why Intel won't have SOI until .09 or .065, while the other CPU FABs (IBM, Motorola, AMD) are all introducing it at .13.
