Tench: Even if you didn't pay for the software (which, BTW, is illegal, hint hint winky winky), I doubt you can save that much money building the PC yourself.

I use Star Office and have quite a few legal copies of various Microsoft OS's (although no XP), so I would certainly be paying for something I didn't need with the typical OS+Office package offered by OEMs. Additionally, you can get an "OEM edition" of Windows quite cheaply when you buy computer hardware (all completely legal as well).

I haven't checked the prices in the US and it certainly is possible that Dell/Compaq and the like charge relatively more here in Europe than is the case in the US.
