The title of the web site says it all.

If you run a chip out of spec range, then you should not complain about it if the chip gets damaged. He was probably running the chip way out of its normal voltage range - at that point, even the thermal clock throttling wouldn't work.

BTW - as far as I see in the picture, the paste is cleanly spread over the chip, with some overhang over the edges. What makes it look uneven is the uneven separation from the chip (ie half on one side, and half on the other).

As far as something else between the heatsource and the heatsink, what would the other option be - allow an exposed die to oxygen? for connection to a metal heatsink.
