"By 2004, IDC predicts the biometrics market will expand to $1.8 billion from $166 million in 1999."

Lowered expectations? Is IDC cutting its four years out estimates for biometrics by over 50%? And if so, what assumptions were in the earlier IDC model that are no longer viable? Perhaps, IDC's newest predictions for the biometrics market is limited to "network authentication".
From yesterday's release:

"IDC believes the market for biometrics used for network authentication will grow to $887 million by 2005, with fingerprint technology accounting for $656 million, or 68 percent market share when compared to other biometric technologies." But is this consistent with IDC's use of the term "overall biometrics market", in its headline?
