LevelLevel 3 Wins AOL Contract

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- Level 3 Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:LVLT) today announced new multi-year agreements with America Online, Inc., the world's leading interactive services company, under which America Online will purchase Level 3's Link Global Wavelength and Center Colocation services in North America. America Online will also purchase Link Private Line services connecting North America to several cities in Europe.

Under the terms of the Link Global Wavelength IRU agreement, America Online has purchased major routes throughout North America to deliver broadband and broadcast services to its customers in key markets. America Online also entered into a multi-year agreement to lease Center Colocation space in Level 3's advanced data center facilities in six U.S. markets. Additionally, America Online will use Link Private Line services to connect North America to several cities in Europe. Level 3 continues to be a primary provider of Connect Modem dial-up Internet access to America Online.

"These agreements add to an ongoing relationship we've had for the past two years and underscore the strategic value of our broadband services," said Kevin O'Hara, Level 3's president and chief operating officer. "We appreciate the increasing and continuing commitment that America Online is making to Level 3, and believe the value of our technically advanced backbone and cost structure is becoming more and more evident to our customers."

Hi Stock Fairy,

Thanks for your comments on ENE's bandwidth bazaar. You are correct in assuming I was only seeking your input on this division. I think the most striking thing about the whole explosion of networks since 1997 has been the fact that almost everyone, myself included, were initially mesmerized by the possibilities of the new technologies. What was disregarded by venture capitalists, investment bankers, entrepreneurs and investors alike was the potential size of the market. Frankly, I didn't do any real analysis along these lines until mid-2000 and when I did, I found the disparity between investment and potential returns to be breathtaking.

Many here chastise the ILECs for their mendacity and, as Bob Metcalfe points out, their greater interest in lobbying and regulatory matters than for innovation. But there is one aspect of the ILEC view that I admire. They actually have a clue on how to go about protecting their bottom line. So, I've no idea what may happen with ENE's bandwidth properties, but I'm of the mind that they'll be bought up for a very attractive price to an established buyer and simply get melded into some other company's operations. JMVHO.

[[BTW, a MSA would be a Master Services Agreement? ]]

Ciao!
