MM,
There is a bronze statue of John Harvard in the yard. The statue has a weathered patina except for his left toe that shines. It shines because average students on their way to exams rub his toe for luck, it's an old tradition that has been followed for years. During mid terms there is a line of average students standing around with their hands in their pockets because it's cold in Cambridge in the winter. I used to hang around not to rub his shoe but to pick up the subway tokens that fell out of pockets. I have always been optimistic that I could beat "average" and I can. Last summer on a visit to campus I found several tokens at John's feet. I had to dig a little in the dirt but they were there for anyone to take.
Beating "Average" is not easy, sometimes you have to dig in the dirt.
