i2, Intel and Siemens Business Services Collaborate On Global Supply Chain

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 27, 2001--i2 Technologies, Inc., Intel Corporation and Siemens Business Services (SBS) today announced a new software and service solution for electronic supply chain management.

Known as the ``E-Managed Service Chain,'' the solution combines procurement, logistics, customization, transportation, installation and integration tools into one highly integrated package. The solution uses i2's supply chain management tools and runs on Fujitsu Siemens Primergy(1) four- and eight-way, Intel® Pentium® III Xeon(TM) processor-based servers.

Intel-based servers were chosen for this solution because of their open, scalable and easy-to-implement architecture.
SBS is implementing the multi-million dollar solution globally within Siemens AG. The solution is replicable and is currently available to corporate customers in Europe, and it is expected to be available to US-based customers starting in 2002.

Solution Specifics

The E-Managed Service Chain brings together the skills and areas of competency of three major players in the IT marketplace:

i2's market-leading solutions for dynamic value chain management, which help increase visibility from suppliers to customers for better decisions and faster action. Products from i2 include Global Logistics Monitor, Factory Planner, Customer Management, along with the i2 Platform.
Intel's best-in-class enterprise technology such as Pentium III Xeon processor-based servers. Intel® Solution Centers, high-tech testing facilities for e-Business, are also intended to play a crucial role in the project, hosting pre-testing of future demanding scenarios.
Siemens Business Services' expertise as a managed service provider for procurement and rollout services as well as a system integrator.
The combination of the tools into one supply chain is expected to shorten lengthy procurement cycles and costly inefficiencies, and will ultimately provide better service to customers. The joint project has greatly benefited from the e-Business alliance between Intel and i2 announced in February. The alliance is aimed at accelerating the deployment of the i2 SCM solutions powered by Intel-based servers.

I doubt it. If there is no need for 64-bit on the desktop, why should Intel risk its Itanium strategy and introduce an x86-64-like extension for Pentium 4?

Good point... Of course, Intel could ultimately bring IA-64 to the desktop as well... although I don't foresee that until after 2005.

Tench, they are targeted to two separate markets. For example, does the Itanium have SSE and SSE2 ? ( I don't know the answer but I bet it does not )
