You're the one who brought up "resting pulse" - so of course that is what I was making reference to in my statement

of course you know i was just funnin'...maybe i should put a <dry humor> 'round those words. but also, it shows how imprecise language is, and how much we rely on context for "intended meaning", as opposed to meaning revealed by grammar. something to keep in mind for the approaching tornado in machine translation!

i hear so many stories about people getting hurt playing basketball. i have never had problems with tennis except for plantar fascitis (sp?). it seems like a good lifetime sport as one can eventually retire to doubles. they had an article in the WSJ a while back about these centenarians who traverse the country still playing tournaments. some die right on the court but nobody cares; keep playing. what a way to go!

I have no idea what the actual pulse during physical road running is.

you might want to invest some of your hard-sung marks or francs or whatever in a sub-$100 heart rate monitor. i think this is a great training tool as i can gear myself to specific heart-rate levels in real time, as opposed to maintaining some outward pace that does not account for the body's current condition, weather, and other factors that affect aerobic stress load. with the advances achieved in HRMs over the past decade, it seems a whole new school of training has opened up. check it out! amazon.com
Mark Guralnick, Running Times
"The bottom line is: I ran 20 PR's in 26 races."

Jeff Testerman, St. Petersburg Times
"I tried Parker's heart rate monitor training program for two months, then obliterated my best racing records at 5K, 10K and 15K. And not just by a little."

re: Lance,

I thought he lives in France now

those are words that will break Austin's heart. his name is painted on commonly biked roads and on bumper stickers and T-shirts. i think he still has a house here, but is probably in Europe most of the time. he recently played a charity tennis event here with Sampras and Agassi; hand-eye coordination does not appear to be among his many talents.
