3Dnow came out and then SSE appeared almost a year later.

SSE showed up in Katmai and was in development long before 3DNever showed up. To think it was a reaction is once again the silly notion that the world revolves around AMD.

Your assumption is incorrect. The #1 goal for a business is to make money to grow, followed closely by sustaining that growth. One way to accomplish this is to take markets from your competitor, which is the way AMD runs business. The other way is to increase the total available market, or to go after new markets, and that is primarily how Intel runs their business.
