The difference between the Duron/Athlon, PIII vs PIII(512k) is that the P4's longer pipeline is more likely to benefit from a higher hit rate all other things being equal.

As for the SMT - I was using Intel's numbers, and yes it would only apply for some software, but that would all be software were the extra speed could be useful. In my second calculation I used 25%.

Only 1.25 months to go to find out.
