Each established religion has its own doctrine and its own set of acceptable behaviors in and out of the place of worship. For example, when I go into a Temple, I wear a Yamaka out of respect for the church, the people, their religion, and their God. I would frown on somebody walking in and announcing that the people there are dunces and believe in an imaginary friend.

"Discussion or reference to religion" is fine with me if it respects the views and faiths of all of the participants. However, my personal view of acceptable terms is somewhat irrelevant, don't you think?
