You may have better experiences than I have had, but given the largeness and diversity in the country, there seems to be a dearth of independent thinking. I rather like to take the view that no right or freedom is ever safe. Even those rights that seem to be etched in stone. Given the right circumstances, the people through a legal process can repeal any part of the Constitution/Bill of Rights, without batting an eye. I notice that, currently, 60% agree with government censorship of the news. Some 80-90% support military tribunals....secret trials, 2/3 majority for guilt/death penalty, rules of evidence that may [or do, I'm not sure] include hearsay as evidence; the defendent cannot select his/her own counsel. No appeals. The hearsay rule is quite interesting. Ashcroft announced a program where foreigners can get on the fast track for citizenship or green cards if they can provide usefull and reliable information on terrorism. That should generate lots of hearsay evidence. IMO, what we have here in the military tribunal is a system of justice where the defendent is guilty until proven innocent and we're not going to give the defendent much of a chance by selecting the counsel for them. And this is a system of justice with 80-90% public approval. Give us a couple more terrorist events with great loss of life and you'll have the people beating their way down to the poll booths to repeal the 4th amendment or whatever amendment is said to be standing in the way of national security. Ooops, I got on a soapbox and got away from the religion stuff, sorry. I don't think this religious freedom stuff is that hard. If people would actually use their brain and some common sense... Here's not using a brain or common sense... at the end of the article you've even got the ACLU saying these people in Kensington don't get it...washingtonpost.com jttmab
