Sometimes fares are lower depending on the direction of travel; e.g. NY - ZRH - NY is cheaper than ZRH - NY - ZRH because the airlines figure they can steal more from the Swiss than the Americans!

Thanks Michael. Regarding the cost per mile could you provide more information as to the load factor those costs are calculated - e.g. 70% 80% ?? and also how much the fuel cost and financing are per mile seat. More important is there a break down between cost of take off and landing and cruise cost? Fuel consumption is very different in each instance and also wear and tear on the aircraft and more so on the engines.

From what I recall take off are the most costly because aside from fuel consumption the stress on the engines and the servicing is a big factor.
