t4, was it the -- new Silk Road' will become a Russian energy superhighway -- that got to you? Eric Margolis is a Canadian who writes some incredibly cynical stuff, you should see his views on Ottawa politics. :) Too bad Margolis didn't take into account that Putin is the leader of a bankrupt country that relies on natural resources to pay the interest on that $170 billion debt.

This wasn't a "dazzling coup," this was merely survival...

I like to read ole Eric but another way to look at it is with 'the strategic ally of Iran, that already has good oil infrastructure and borders the Caspian, and has, despite all else a fairly modern non tribal society, why would Russia waste their time with Afghanistan for oil ?
