Hang Seng falls more than two percent

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong stocks were sharply lower on Wednesday afternoon as an unexpected drop in U.S. consumer confidence signalled to investors that any recovery in the world's largest economy is likely to be delayed until late 2002.

A near-three percent drop in Tokyo's Nikkei average added to selling pressure in Hong Kong.


The benchmark Hang Seng index was off 2.11 percent at 11,024.25 points at 3:14 p.m. (0714
