(Korean) Mobile-to-mobile traffic surging

About 60 percent of mobile traffic in Korea is between mobile phones,
highlighting that fixed-line telephone services are losing their share faster
than expected in competition with mobile services, industry sources said
yesterday.

The so-called MM (mobile-to-mobile) traffic rose from 50 percent in total in
the first quarter last year to 59 percent at the end of June this year.

In contrast, mobile-to-landline, or landline-to-mobile traffic slid to less than 40
percent in the second quarter this year, suggesting that the balance is tipped
in favor of MM among telephone service users in Korea.

Analysts said the surge in MM traffic was widely expected as the number of
mobile phone subscribers surpassed that of fixed-line counterparts last year.

Currently, more than 28 million people are subscribing to mobile phone
services.

The growing MM traffic, meantime, is expanding the scale of the mobile
connection fee market.

The MM mobile connection fee market is estimated to reach 1.5 trillion won
this year, mobile carriers' officials said.

SK Telecom, the country's largest mobile carrier, is in conflict with KTF and
LG Telecom over mobile connection fees.

Latecomers argued that SKT is reaping more than what it deserves as the
current connection rate does not reflect SKT's diminishing cost.
