"IBM to Cut 1,000 Microelectronics Jobs"
Wednesday November 28 10:56 AM ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - news) said on Wednesday it would cut about 4.6 percent of jobs in its microelectronics division due to decreased demand for semiconductors.

An IBM spokesman said about 1,000 management and non-management positions would be eliminated out of the current 21,500 spots.

The division, which makes microchips for IBM and other tech companies such as Apple Computer (Nasdaq:AAPL - news), has had no job cuts since the early 1990s, the spokesman said.
