When I was about 14, i was down at a place we called "the Lagoon" and I was flicking matches into this little pond that was surrounded by dry marsh grass. One of the matches missed the target, but it looked like it went out on impact so I mosied on my way home. About a half hour later, a bunch of fire trucks screamed by my house as I watched from the window...my head barely visible above the windowsill, muttering to myself "oh shit". Another half hour later and *all* of the firetrucks pull into our driveway and on the street in front of our house. I was looking for places to hide now. But the hiding places in the loft were limited. And the fireman came to the door, my stepmother opened the door......the fireman explained how that there had been a fire down at the Lagoon, my stepmother saying "uh huh, uh huh" and then the fireman holds up my sisters' clothing and asked if they were there. Seems my sisters had been down at our swimming hole smoking cigarettes and taking a dip and had left their wet cloths there to dry. The firemen assumed that they had been careless with their matches. My sisters got in sooooo much trouble, but I knew that it was my errant match that started the fire. Obviously it wouldn't be right to not cop to setting the fire, but things were pretty hot around the house so I decided to wait for things to cool down before squaring the information. I finally told them when I was 28 years old....14 years later that I had set the fire.
