Yes, it was United. And that post is the first draft of my letter to them. <g>

What amazed me is how well United handled things on this end and how poorly on that end. They are the only carrier in Terminal 7 at LAX and Terminal 1 at O'Hare, I believe, so it appears to be purely an airline management issue that is causing this.

Hell, if someone was going to try to smuggle explosives onto a plane, I suspect there are better ways to do it than hiding it in a toy being carried by a six-year-old boy.


Actually, that's been done. It was a very long ago, back in the early days of plane hijacking, so I'm vague on the details but I recall being startled that anyone would do that.

Not that that justifies traumatizing the child by breaking the toy in front of him. There are surely better ways of handling things.
