Let's talk more about culture issues:
. Scandinavians think nudity is nature and free to do so but most other parts of the world consider it is offensive and could be punishable by death. Should you consider your culture is better than theirs?

In this case, my vote is for Scandinavian culture. Nude beaches or burqas?? No contest. :-)

Hi, Michael.

This ignore-button is awfully visible right now. If I think about wars started in the last 50 years (what I would call recent history), I remember:

- Korea
- Israel
- Vietnam
- Somalia
- Chechnya
- Iraq/Kuwait
- Afghanistan
- Jugoslavia

Since the discussion started with EU, I guess you are still referring to EU. EU has not been involved with starting any of these wars. But to many people in the non-English language areas, it is very clear that USA has part in the trouble around Israel and support Saudi-Arabia too much, which may be the cause of the hatred of some guy named Osama. There are some good reasons why Americans are hated so much at so many places around the world - these people feel that USA limits their liberty. This is a commonly expressed opinion on non-English news media.

Danes love to bring their children to restaurants, but unfortunately some better restaurants don't want the baby carriages standing in the middle of the restaurant, so if you bring one, leave it outside. Generally parents are advised to let their babies sleep outside because it's good for their health, and it is very natural to do that, too, if the baby is asleep while the parents eat at a restaurant. If you had children and lived in a peaceful society, you would think that way, too.

A danish woman was arrested for doing exactly that in New York. The baby slept, and the mother was within visible sight of the baby carriage. She wasn't very clever, so she didn't know about crime rates in the USA etc., so she did as every baby-loving mother would do over here. The authorities jailed the mother and didn't allow her to see her baby for weeks. I find that utterly disgusting, and family organisations and ministries in Europe tried to help her everything they could, enabling her to see her baby again. I bet that there are many families in Denmark that would never go to the USA simply because they are afraid of having their children kidnapped by the authorities for no reason, after that incident.

This example I just brought up to show you how irrational your argumentation is. I don't consider USA a specially dangerous place to be in, just because your crime rates are a lot higher. And I don't consider Americans to be child haters, just because they in some cases deny ordinary mothers to see their children. The people involved in this incident reacted as they probably should if this had been an American mother. But most of them also changed their mind and their attitude, when they learned the background of the incident. I don't consider European culture to be better than any other culture in the World. It's just different. The American also isn't better than other cultures. It's just different. I know Americans who moved to Europe because they like it much better, and I know Europeans who move to USA because they like it much better.

The key to understanding another culture is to understand why people prefer that culture to other cultures.

Once you have learned why most couples with children in Denmark don't marry, you understand the culture. Until then, treat it as something beyond your comprehension.

Lars.
