AG Ashcroft kowtows to Israel...

(11:15) Ashcroft: Israeli detainees in US to be released soon

November, 29 2001

Some of the Israelis arrested and held in the wake of the September 11 terror attacks in the United States will be released in the near future, US Attorney General John Ashcroft said this morning.

Most of the Israelis are being held for immigration violations, though some were initially picked up by US law enforcement officers who suspected they were involved in the Manhattan attacks.

Ashcroft made his remarks during a telephone conversation this morning with Attorney-General Elyakim Rubinstein.

Rubinstein requested Ashcroft work to shorten as much as possible the time Israelis are held in American detention facilities, considering none of the detainees were connected to the terror strikes, Army Radio reported.

Ashcroft responded he will try to deal with the matter personally, but noted the US has cracked down on violators of immigration laws in the wake of the attacks.
