Semi Cap Equip : Bank of America believes mood out Semicon Japan Trade conference is gloomy for semi cap equip companies; consensus thinking is that equip spending will decline 31% in 2001 followed by a 15-20% decline in 2002 (spending at INTC is expected to be in the $6.5 bln range for 2002 vs. $7.5 bln in 2001). Attendance was poor and companies outside of Japan did not attend including NVLS and LRCX; speculation was of impending layoffs everywhere - B of A believes AMAT could cut another 1,500-2,000 employees next week, NVLS could have another 10-15% headcount reduction in Jan, cuts at LCRX could be deep as mgmt is moving towards an out-sourcing manufacturing strategy. Sentiment was that Japan semi industry "is a mess;" many equip companies believe that Japan is not making the tech investment to be a player in 2002, with Sony as the exception.
