Gopher, Re: < (Incidentally, if anyone else has a problem with stability of their Athlon, but it boots OK with the cache disabled, it is probably because they haven't used enough thermal paste and there are hot spots - been rock solid since I re-seated the heat sink :^)>

Are you telling us you had a *BOOT PROBLEM* on a machine that otherwise ran ok -- and that the problem went away after reseating the heat sink?

What symptoms were you seeing besides a boot problem?

Gopher: That is why I am surprised that you equate BIOS patch with absence of a flaw in the processor. It could just be a tweak to a clock setting but more likely it is a flag that disables the malfunctioning path through the processor.

I never said "absence of a flaw" - certainly not. Perhaps I should have said "shallow" rather than "superficial"&#133 but there's almost certainly a problem with something in the current Itanium processors.

However, if you can directly identify the issue and circumvent it (possibly with a performance penalty) with a BIOS patch, that's a pretty strong indicator that the bug is "shallow", rather than fundamental or inherent in the architecture / processor.
