While it's true that there WERE 4-5% dividends in 1973-5, what is also true is that there was double digit inflation. So the theory that "you got paid" to wait out the market drop is no more true than it is today with near zero inflation and near zero dividends. Perhaps LESS so as the dividends limited the erosion to damage MAYBE to half the value of inflation.
