I would think that when the downtrend was over, we'd start seeing some bullflags and bullish wedges. Like we've seen all over stock charts lately. This chart is a few weeks old, but shows how there were no real rising wedges on the way up. E&M studied a lot of charts for many years, and built on the work of others too, like Schabacker. They also did the bulk of that work in an era that had brutal deflationary bear markets. Here's another quote: "The rising wedge is a quite characteristic pattern for bear market rallies. It is so typical, in fact, that frequent appearance of wedges at a time when, after an exhaustive decline, there is some question as to whether a new bull trend is in the making, may be taken as evidence that the primary trend is still down."
