The whole phenomina can be traced to the fact that religion is one of the few untaxed enterprises. This makes it very profitable since there is no tangible product to manufacture and all profits go right in the pocket.

Not in my opinion....secular people almost by definition are thinking people....religious people are largely followers and are willing to accept something, ie believe, rather than try to use reason and logic. I guess that's where the term "fear of god" comes in.
