exactly on your points

you are correct in your assessments. i thought the margolis article was ridiculous. it looked like he was under deadline pressure to crank something out even if it might be nonsense. i also thought his geography input made no sense. in addition if russia has won something with afghanistan, i am very happy. the russians and americans have a lot of fish to fry.

to your edit comment -- as the atlantic articles from some weeks ago detail, pakistan has always used afghanistan as a big buffer so pakistan would only have to worry about indian aggression. the atlantic article said the taliban was a concoction started by the benizer(sp?) bhutto (sp?) government in an attempt to cover pakistan's backside.

Kastel, the reason Afghanistan became the giant petri dish of terrorism of the ME is because no one care about this extremely poor country in the first place. It's landlocked, infested with land mines and drug trafficking makes up the largest part of the countries GDP.

The Margolis article was more or less an attempt to establish himself as a avant-guard geo-political superstar on the web, and to do it with articles that no mainstream paper would publish is nothing less than self serving. He does write for the Sun chain of newspapers, doesn't he?

BTW; nice list...
