Jim,

1. I DL and ran Norton anti-virus on the machine after it started misbehaving but no viruses found (and limited subsequent activity - ie. internet or S/W installs).
2. The machine is just running distributed.net's RC5 code crunching program (which does keep the CPU very warm but not as hot as the 'burn-in' S/W that Ali suggested.
3. Win2K SP2 (could be SP1 but I think I installed the update on this machine)
4. System resources... will have to wait until the system will startup (about 30 minutes?). I doubt this is a problem as the system isn't loaded with extras (hardware or software).

Additional information:
(1) crash noted as a KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR within win2k.sys
(2) after crash I have to power off/on with the power supply switch and immediately after a crash the machine cannot find the IDE hard drive.
(3) after ten minutes it will find the drive but once "warmed up" by the first crash it will typically crash within five minutes. And on restart post-crash the OS usually checks the drives for errors and finds something to fix.
(4) Hmm. This restart it failed when loading windows with a "Unknown Hard Error." I usually let the machine sit longer before further torment.

I think it is time to try a different HDD and fresh Win2K installation.

Thanks,

-PT
