I think Jim had some inside information so to speak, and that he knew all along that he wouldn't have to shoot any crocodiles. But that's not what he told us.

Jim Feely joined the Natal Parks Board in 1955 and was familiar with the American literature on the concept of wilderness. He gave me a book to read on wildlife management by a man named Trippensee, where the ten fundamental principles of the wilderness concept were listed. The impact of the words still live with me because they articulated what I intuitively had experienced. It seemed more than coincidence that Jim Feely had arrived at this moment.
