re: "possible system cooling problems"

I think the system has the same general cooling capacity as it did during the summer when it operated reliably.

CPU fan: it might have slowed down some as I have never noted its actual speed. at the moment it is reported as 4,950 RPM vs 4,500 +/- 10% specified by manufacturer.

Thermal Paste: I will investigate when I shift to a new HSF during a pending system transplant to a new case.

Dust: the case has experienced some dust collection on the passive inlets due to a negative pressure from imbalanced fans in vs out. This was a temporary problem as I was experimenting with the fan configuration (extra front 2x92 fan discharge). The heat sink had some dust but I cleared it.

Case Placement: it is not against any obstruction and elevated off the carpet to keep the lower front case fan inlet completely unobstructed.

The HSF presently in use is a Thermaltake Volcano II which has performed well - not too loud and enough cool to keep CPU at less than 50C at full load.

Thanks for the comments... with a new HDD the system has been stable for 12 hours.
