Northern Alliance forces 'entering Kandahar'

A top Northern Alliance commander says his forces are moving into the Taliban's last stronghold in southern Afghanistan.

Bismillah Khan, the alliance's deputy defence minister, says anti-Taliban forces have entered Kandahar.

Khan says he has no details of the situation in the city.

It is the last city to be held by the Taliban after US air strikes and offensives by the Northern Alliance pushed them out of most of Afghanistan.

Khan says it is not clear whether any Taliban in Kandahar have surrendered or are challenging the advance.

Meanwhile, a commander of an anti-Taliban tribal force, says his fighters are also nearing the city.

"Our forces are three miles east of Kandahar airport," Mohammed Jalal Khan said. "We hope to capture Kandahar soon."
