According to a post on TMF, SUNW continued to have their problems after switching to other memory vendors. Continuing problems with memory from other vendors is implied by SUNW adding the error detection and correction circuitry. Common sense tells me that "enterprise class" servers without cache and memory error detection and correction will not have the necessary reliability. It is possible to wonder if the additional circuitry wasn't left out of the design in order to compete on price/performance, hoping that the higher failure rate would not be a problem.
