Put it in a different light:

Spann asked a question. The pissed off Pakistani growled his response, and it is quite understandable, because the rabid Pakistani jihadites truly came to the war convinced they could best America's best, and have been frustrated to find only NA to fight.

Trying to intimidate the guy back, Spann & associate drew their pistols.

The prisoners, convinced they were about to die, or determined to finally create American casualties, figured they'd take the Americans with them.

If my different wording of the events is more like it, it is hardly a war crime. It might be an error in judgment on the part of the US interrogators, coupled with the gross NA error of not searching the prisoners well enough at entry.

After that, it was merely as advertised; it escalated into a riot.
