Yes, I ever seen this on one of my system too. But his problem is not that intermittent. Heat is highly suspected in his case. It's one of the reason I suspect HD's dilatation to a point that automatic re-calibration don’t work anymore.

Thanks, I not only checked the IDE cable, I switched channels and even the IDE cable itself. And as Gottfried pointed out, it seemed to be more heat related as after four hours the HDD was no longer available upon system restart. If the system is stable with new HDD, then I will put the old one back in and see if it continues to become unavailable - four hours seems like a long time for HDD warm-up but it seems to be reasonable.
