Syria Warns the US Against "Unlimited Problems"

28 November 2001

Calling it “a fatal mistake to harm any Arab country,” Syrian Foreign Minister Farouq a-Sharaa’ warned the United States against expanding its war on terrorism beyond its current boundaries, reports the official Syrian news agency (SANA). Speaking at a joint press conference with Lebanese Foreign Minister, Mahmoud Hamoud, a-Sharaa’ said, “Any threat against any Arab country is rejected and any strike against any Arab country would lead to unlimited problems. The US knows this and Europe does too.”

The source of those “problems” according to the Syrian Foreign Minister is the failure of countries to “make distinctions between terrorism and resistance…” Such a state, said a-Sharaa’ “might find itself as if it were to give political cover and some thing of legality for real terrorists.” Making his implied stance explicit, a-Sharaa’ stated, “What happened on September 11 is terrorism and what is taking place against the Israeli occupation is resistance, a fact agreed upon by Syria and Lebanon.” At the same time, SANA reports that the Syrian minister called for “dialogue and viewpoints exchange as to define terrorism.” According to the Syrian news agency, “Mohammad Yaghi, Lebanese MP, asserted continued Lebanese resistance till the liberation of the occupied territories and the securing of detainees and prisoners freedom.”

On the other hand, the Syrian Foreign Minister found positive things to say about statements made by the American Secretary of State Colin Powell in Kentucky: “There are definitely positive points in this vision, including the end of Israeli occupation and the implementation of related UN Security Council resolutions, the principle of land for peace and the Madrid Terms of Reference.” According to Damascus Radio, “Peace is conditioned to the full Israeli withdrawal from all occupied Arab territories including Jerusalem, the dismantling of settlements and the realization of Palestinian legitimate rights.”

SANA reported that a-Sharaa’ was in Lebanon and “handed a message from President Bashar Assad to Lebanese President Emile Lahoud, within the frame of continued coordination and consultation between both sisterly states, Syria and Lebanon.” Those talks led the Syrian Foreign Minister to express, according to SANA, his view “that the Syrian and Lebanese viewpoints were identical regarding issues discussed…” and that the Lebanese and Syrian governments have the same objectives when it comes to peace: “namely, to restore the occupied Arab territories and to safeguard the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.” There is also “full coordination between Syria and Lebanon on the issue of combating terrorism,” reported the Syrian news agency.

Two Palestinians Killed at the Bkaot Passage in Bikat Hayarden.
This afternoon, a suspicious Palestinian vehicle arrived at the Bkaot passage in Bikat Hayarden. An investigation revealed that during an inspection of the vehicle, held by the passage soldiers, the vehicle attempted to evade and hit the soldiers.
The soldiers who sensed danger executed the suspicious vehicle arrest procedures.
Being as the driver did not respond to the soldier's orders and continued with the evasive action, the soldiers opened fire toward the vehicle and killed the driver.
Apparently, as a result of the fire, an innocent passenger in a different vehicle was killed by a straying bullet.
IDF expresses its sorrow for the life lost.
IDF continue with the event investigation.

Palestine: The State that never was:
Time to cast out this Roman atrocity!

Large Majority Of Israelis Currently Against Palestinian State

Foreign Minister Shimon Peres told the United Nations two weeks ago that there is broad Israeli support for a Palestinian state - but what is the truth? A poll carried out earlier this week shows that a full 81% of the public opposes such a state unless it can be certain that the Palestinians would honor the agreement under which the state would be formed. Almost half the population - 47% - opposes a PLO state under any circumstances. The poll was commissioned by IMRA (Independent Media Review and Analysis) and the ZOA (Zionist Organization of America), and sampled 502 adult Israelis - including Israeli-Arabs. Only 14% of the respondents are unconditionally in favor of a Palestinian state.

About 2/3 of those questioned said they feel that a PA state would constitute a threat to Israel, and about the same amount said that it would strengthen the ability of other Arab states to threaten Israel.
