Joe, re: exotic cases

I would be interested in cases actually designed for transport. I have read some interesting articles on systems built into brief cases and this might be an acceptable route but even smaller would be nice. The challenge would seem to be have a system with no cards installed (low-profile), minimal motherboard area, and low power requirements (simpler cooling and smaller PSU). The Mini-iTx seems promising. I don't think I have seen an integrated motherboard with both built-in network (for home and some travels) and modem (for all the other places one roams). Of course, there will probably be some compromises but it remains an interesting mental exercise.

If there wasn't so much interest in building something, a notebook computer would certainly be a reasonable solution plus offer the battery only option and a nice compact screen but at a much higher expense. My luggable "concept" would likely borrow a monitor at the destination.

Joe: Speaking of luggable computer, I came across a website some time ago that had pictures of some exotic cases, and the one I liked was actually a suitcase with all the stuff (motherboard, floppies, fans etc) mounted inside. With a case / computer like that, I am sure he was a star at the LAN parties.

From my days of going to LAN parties, I'd say all the star of the show would need is a cushioned sleeping surface. You'd be surprised how hard a table becomes after more than a few hours ;-)
