Paul, re: HDD reliability

I too was concerned about net reports on the IBM 75GX series since it was my choice for my current work computer when it was built last Fall. It has remained in the "not yet failed" camp so far.

www.storagereview.com has an online database of reader reported reliability. One must register and then enter one HDD before you can access the reviews. The 75GX series didn't fare too well but I don't have a real context for this.

I tried the Fujitsu because it was reported to be quieter... it was quiet but it also appears to have failed. And even with a "no questions" replacement policy the cost (time & patience) to deal with the failure within its first six months will far exceed the cost of the drive.

I still need to add some off-site backup to my data storage program to supplement my current "NAS" (an old Pentium 200 with a large HDD). I usually disconnect the "NAS" between backups to isolate it from some potential disasters but off-site would be a good addition.

Another problem many backup solutions fail to consider is testing to make sure the backups are good -- something that is pretty painful to learn during a restore.
