New York, Nov. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Novell Inc. shares rose in extended trading after the maker of computer-network software said it expects to break even on sales of $265 million to $275 million in its fiscal first quarter ending in January.

The Provo, Utah-based company was expected to have a loss of 4 cents a share in its first quarter, the average forecast of analysts polled by Thomson Financial/First Call. Novell earlier said its fiscal fourth-quarter loss widened on expenses related to job cuts and investment losses. Excluding those costs, the results beat analyst estimates.

Novell shares rose as high as $4.55 in after-hours trading, up 14 percent from its close of $3.99 at the end of regular U.S. trading.

Others stocks that rose after the 4 p.m. market close included Kana Software Inc., a software developer, which climbed as high as $1.74, up 30 percent, from its close at $1.34.
