PALESTINIANS DISCUSS SUCCESSOR TO ARAFAT November 30, 2001

The Middle East Newsline reports: “Leading Palestinians are quietly discussing a successor to Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat. Israeli and Palestinian sources said a growing number of Palestinians regard Arafat as having ceded much of his authority to insurgency groups in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The sources said Arafat routinely passes over his security commanders to deal directly with the heads of new militias.
Arafat, the sources said, is not under any threat of being overthrown. But they said the Palestinian elite has been discussing a successor should the 72-year-old Arafat die or become incapacitated.

A senior Israeli Defense Ministry official said any succession to Arafat will be violent. The official, regarded as a leading expert on Palestinian affairs, said PA security officials are already taking sides in the struggle.

‘I don't see a smooth replacement or exchange of power,’ the Israeli defense official said. ‘Even the Palestinians are taking the same line. I tend to believe there will be some kind of struggle between various establishments, maybe a violent one, an active struggle.’…”
